The Coppersmith Barbet(Megalaima haemacephala) is one of Thailands more colourful common birds. The birds get their name by the sound they make which is said to sound like a coppersmith beating out a piece of metal.
Distinctive call of Coppersmith Barbet
Well I have never heard a coppersmith at work but I have heard the bird calling and yes it is quite easy to recognise since it does indeed sound like someone tapping on metal. You can listen to the call of the Coppersmith Barbet here.
The Coppersmith Barbet is quite well distributed around Thailand, the photograph in this post was taken in a large park in Bangkok, but I have observed the birds in Prachuap Kiri Khan as well.
The birds are mainly fruit eaters although they do eat insects. Nesting tends to be in holes in trees which the birds chisel out with their beaks.
